Right on the heels of those local buses grinding to a halt ahead of the weekend, Grand River Transit (GRT) service will continue as a tentative agreement has been reached between Unifor Local 4304 and the Region of Waterloo.
It comes as the union, which represents around 850 GRT workers, which includes the region’s bus operators, entered into a legal strike position as of May 1.
A strike would impact GRT services across Waterloo Region, including GRT buses and MobilityPLUS services. The ION light rail service is not included.
The region and the union were in discussions throughout the course of the week, looking to come to an agreement before that deadline.
With that, the two sides came to an agreement at around 8 p.m. on Thursday, Apr. 30.
“The union membership will hold a ratification vote on the tentative agreement on Sunday, May 3,” said GRT in a release.
“All buses, including MobilityPLUS, continue to operate. Further updates will be provided following the vote.”
