Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) has released photos of a suspect tied to a vehicle theft in Elmira, hoping it will help turn in leads as the investigation continues.
It comes after the incident was first reported Tuesday, Sept. 5, at around 9:20 p.m., with a witness saying that they saw a man steal an unoccupied vehicle right from a local gas station in Elmira.
Through their early investigation, police were able to access security footage from the gas station and are now releasing photos of the suspect in question.
Few other details are known at this time surrounding the incident or the man pictured in the photos, with the investigation still ongoing.
With vehicle thefts continuing to be an issue across the region, WRPS is also out with some reminders to help ensure other residents in the community keep their vehicles protected.
Those recommendations include:
- Block access to the onboard diagnostic port to help prevent thieves from reprogramming key fobs.
- Use a steering wheel locking device.
- Store key fobs in a radio-frequency shielding pouch when not in use.
- Install an aftermarket GPS tracking device to assist with vehicle recovery.
- Ensure all keys are accounted for and never leave keys inside a vehicle.
- Report suspicious persons or behaviour to police immediately
