Families have been displaced, and cleanup efforts are still ongoing, all tied to a multi-unit fire at a townhouse in Kitchener, with damage estimates pegged at as much as $750,000.
The Kitchener Fire Department said it was called late in the evening on Friday, Oct. 16, at 8:23 p.m., to an eight-unit townhouse on Activa Avenue in Kitchener.
“Flames and smoke were visible from the roof above four units when crews arrived,” said the Kitchener Fire Department.
The blaze and the effort to contain it have since led to substantial fire, smoke, and water damage across the list of impacted units, with the fire department saying the extent of the damage means “the occupants will not be permitted to return to those units at this time.”
“Primary and secondary searches of all units were completed, and it was confirmed that everyone had safely evacuated the building,” said the local fire department.
“There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters, and the fire is not considered suspicious at this time.”
Following the initial investigation, crews have said damage is currently estimated between $500,000 and $750,000.
The fire department also specified that working smoke alarms were found on all levels of every unit.
The incident is still under investigation, as the Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified and crews remain on site working to determine the exact cause of the blaze.
