It works to mark some of the more impactful individuals right in Waterloo Region, and this year, the Kitchener Lions Club has named two local business and community leaders as the 66th Citizens of the Year.
For 2026, the club has named Penny and Manfred Conrad, celebrating the work the two have achieved in local business and community leadership during their time in the region.
“Manfred arrived in Canada at just 18 years old, an immigrant beginning his new life as a painter and working wherever he could to build a future in his adopted country,” said the Kitchener Lons’ Club in a release. “Penny later joined him from England, and together they set down roots in Waterloo Region, launching what would become a remarkable partnership in business, philanthropy, and community leadership.”
According to the club, the two worked with the region’s House of Friendship, their church, and other local charitable organizations over the years, working to quell poverty and support families in the region during uncertain economic times.
On top of their charitable work, the two also have a passion for environmental progress, with their developments and projects having impacts across the country.
“Their company, The Cora Group, has become a leader in environmental innovation, developing numerous LEED-certified buildings, including Canada’s first zero-carbon building in the University of Waterloo Research Park,” the Kitchener Lions Club said. “Their support for the region’s innovation ecosystem, particularly early-stage companies, has helped fuel Waterloo Region’s economic growth and reputation as a technology centre.”
A special fundraising gala is on the way on May 28 in Penny and Manfred’s honour, working to support the Lions ongoing service work in the region.
“Penny and Manfred’s philanthropy extends across the community, supporting hospitals, cancer care, and many institutions committed to improving quality of life. Their thoughtful and collaborative approach has ensured that their impact is meaningful, lasting, and widely felt.”
