Waterloo Regional Police have laid charges after an assault in Cambridge that resulted in a male being arrested after fleeing into the Grand River.
On April 18, 2026, at approximately 4:20 p.m., police received a report of an assault in the area of Coronation Boulevard.
Officers located a related vehicle and attempted a traffic stop in a parking lot near Coronation Boulevard.
As the vehicle came to a stop, a male passenger fled on foot and ran toward the Grand River.
The male entered the river, where officers continued attempts to take him into custody. With assistance from the Cambridge Fire Department, the male was safely removed from the water and arrested.
As a result of the investigation, a 34-year-old Cambridge male has been charged with 13 criminal offences, including assault, assault with a weapon, failing to comply with a release order, and mischief under $5,000.
The accused and the victim are known to one another.
The accused was held in police custody for a bail hearing.
