The City of Kitchener has agreed to move forward with some new, playful sculptures that are set to grace the entrances of the new Cowan Recreation Centre.
City councillors agreed to approve the commission of a series of five sculptures featuring cartoon-style animal characters by Canadian artist Pierre Poussin.
The pieces are titled Let’s Play! and will welcome visitors at both main entrances of the new centre, with the pieces featuring locally known animals playing sports, such as soccer, basketball, lacrosse, cricket, and volleyball.
“Cowan Recreation Centre is designed to bring people together by building belonging and community through physical activity, recreation and sport,” said Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic.
“These friendly and playful sculptures will welcome visitors with a sense of fun and playfulness that reflects the spirit of the facility — energetic, inclusive and built for everyone.”
The piece was selected by a community jury through a competitive, multi-stage public art process, which saw 21 total entries whittled down to 4 finalists, with Let’s Play! being named as the winner.
Poussin, who is known for his animated and durable public installations across Canada, said the concept draws on the centre’s role as a lively gathering place for families and athletes.
“Public art can make people smile the moment they see it,” Poussin stated.
“Let’s Play! invites people to pause, take photos and enjoy playful moments with the characters as part of their experience at the centre.”
The Cowan Recreation Centre, which is slated to open in the latter portion of 2026, will feature a FIFA‑sized indoor turf field, aquatics centre, quad gymnasium, cricket practice nets, elevated walking track and more.
“As one of the largest recreation investments in Kitchener’s history, the centre is designed to support more than 30 local sport affiliate groups, helping expand programming and reduce waitlists,” the city said in a release.
“With amenities built to host regional tournaments and events, the facility is also expected to support sport tourism, bringing visitors and economic benefits to the community.”
