Canada Day celebrations are on the way across Waterloo Region over the coming days, but as in previous years, there are some important details to keep in mind when setting them off if residents want to avoid any holiday fines.
Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) has already been out with reminders ahead of the infamous holiday in the region, saying that any mischief, law violations, or dangerous acts will be met with fines or worse this Canada Day.
It comes after a dangerous string of incidents in years past, particularly around those fireworks being fired unsafely or directly at people in and around Victoria Park in Kitchener.
It ultimately led to a ban on the sale of fireworks in Kitchener and Waterloo, alongside stricter firework regulations across much of the reigon.
“Setting off fireworks in public spaces, including parks, roadways, schoolyards and other public property, is not permitted under our fireworks bylaw,” said the City of Kitchener in a statement.
“We’ve strengthened our bylaw and are taking a zero-tolerance approach to violations to help protect public safety.”
Please be advised that there are no organized fireworks displays in Victoria Park (Kitchener) on July 1, 2026.

Do NOT attend the area to set off personal fireworks. This poses serious safety risks and may damage park property. Fines may be issued for non-compliance.

In Kitchener and much of the region, there is a set of rules for setting off those fireworks on Canada Day.
Some of those include being 18 years of age or older to set them off, only firing them on personal private property, setting them off at least 10 metres away from any buildings or structures, and only firing them between the hours of 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Canada Day.
The city said that setting fireworks outside of permitted areas and times could result in fines as high as $1,500.
“The best way to enjoy Canada Day fireworks safely is by joining the City’s official Canada Day celebrations at Carl Zehr Square, which will feature a professional pyrotechnic display at 10:40 p.m. for everyone to enjoy,” the City said.
“For firework complaints, call the Waterloo Regional Police Service bylaw line at 519-585-8088. In the event of an emergency or dangerous situation, always call 911.”
