Details are slowly coming in following a fatal multi-vehicle crash on the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 heading through Cambridge, with Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) now confirming that a Kitchener driver has died of his injuries.
The incident itself happened early Saturday afternoon at around 12:30 p.m. on July 11, when police were called about a crash involving nine vehicles near Townline Road.
The extent of the incident, which led to as many as 16 people being sent to hospital, led to an almost 12-hour closure of the 401 between Townline and Wellington Road 33, which didn’t open back up until close to 11:00 p.m., according to OPP.
Photos posted to social media of the incident show glass and metal debris across the roadway, with vehicles dented and damaged, along with one vehicle entirely flipped over in a ditch and a transport truck which had crashed into the highway’s centre median.

While 16 people were injured, one person faced particularly serious injuries, needing to be airlifted to hospital via Ornge Air Ambulance, but later died in hospital of their injuries.
As of Monday, OPP have since confirmed that the driver who died in hospital was a 44-year-old Kitchener man.
While overall details of the incident have still not been fully released, with OPP still urging the public to send in any dash-cam footage or come forward if they witnessed the incident, police have stated that the driver of a transport truck involved in the incident was uninjured and was arrested at the scene.
OPP said that he was arrested for dangerous driving, but as of now, no charges have been officially laid. He was unconditionally released pending the results of the investigation.
Further details will be released as they are known.
