A road closure has been issued by the Region of Waterloo due to a watermain break, warning that it could cause some traffic delays at a busy area of Kitchener.
The region said in a statement that the break happened Wednesday morning, right in the area of Bridge Street East and Lancaster Street.
It has now closed off the northbound lanes of traffic in that stretch as initial repairs get underway, with the region stating that the break damaged portions of that northbound lane itself.
“We’re currently completing temporary road repairs to safely reopen the lane, while the City of Kitchener will make permanent repairs at a later date,” said the Region of Waterloo.
“Temporary repair work is expected to take place from July 15 to July 21.”
It comes as the region was already in the midst of reconstructing Lancaster Street from Wellington through to Bridgeport, working to “provide facilities for pedestrians and cyclists and transit users, improve traffic operations at intersections, and replace deteriorated pavement, sanitary and storm sewers, and watermains.”
“From June to Fall 2026, Lancaster Street West will be closed to through traffic between Elizabeth Street and north of Union Street,” the region stated.
“Local access will be maintained, and access to businesses within the construction area will remain available.”
It said that the detour for the watermain break will use the similar connections being used for the ongoing Lancaster reconstruction.
Drivers will be redirected via Victoria Street North, Weber Street, and Erb Street East or Bridgeport Road East.
“Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and follow posted detour signage while construction is underway.”
