The Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) is urging residents and travellers to plan well in advance and arrive early as construction is set to begin on the main roadway leading to the busy local airport.
Construction on an $8.7 million project is set to get underway as of Monday, July 27, with workers looking to replace the Randall Drain Culvert; a watermain through Fountain Street North.
Due to the scale of the project, workers will be required to close off portions of Fountain Street throughout the construction, which is expected to last 10 weeks, as well as the Fountain Street/Kossuth Road/Fairway Road North roundabout.
“Access to the airport will be maintained throughout construction, but delays are expected,” said YKF in a release.
“Drivers should use an alternate route and leave extra time to get to the airport.”
It means the area will see plenty of traffic and delays throughout until it’s expected to wrap up in early October.
While YKF has stated that the closure will not directly impact the airport, as vehicles will still have access to the popular airport, it is recommending that residents keep the construction in mind when arriving ahead of a flight.
Through the course of the closure, detours will be in place, working to help drivers navigate around the project.
“Drivers approaching from the south will need to follow the posted signage and take Kossuth Road to Shantz Station Road to Menno Street to gain access to Fountain Street North (partial closure) for airport access and local traffic only,” recommended YKF.
