Footage has been released by Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) after an e-scooter was seen moving at high speeds across the expressway in Kitchener.
The dashcam footage shows a person riding the scooter and speeding between vehicles as it entered the busy highway from the Ottawa Street North on-ramp.
It then headed south down the expressway and approached the flyover, which splits the Highway 8 off-ramp from Highway 7/8.
While the exact speed of the rider was not known or has not been released, it can be seen keeping pace with and merging between other vehicles on the highway.
“This is not where an e-scooter belongs,” said WRPS in a post to social media.
“At high speeds, riders have little time to react to vehicles, children, animals, or other unexpected hazards. One wrong move could have devastating consequences.”
According to Ontario’s e-scooter rules, the devices are limited to 24 km/h and are prohibited from being ridden on “controlled-access highways.”
No details have been provided by WRPS regarding any charges tied to the recent incident, but police continue to warn against any similar actions being taken in the future.
“E-scooters are not toys,” said WRPS.
“Know the rules, wear a helmet, control your speed, and ride only where permitted.”
