A local staple in Woolwich Township has hit a major milestone in its restoration efforts, with the Region of Waterloo saying crews have been on site lifting the historic ‘Kissing Bridge.’
The West Montrose Covered Bridge is undergoing a major rehabilitation, looking to bring some new life to the popular site.
The region began its preparations back in 2024, when an environmental assessment was completed, which used long-term monitoring and evaluation, public engagement, and technical reviews to determine recommendations to restore the bridge.
“The assessment included heritage, structural, social, environmental and cost factors to determine the recommended design,” said the Region of Waterloo.
“The project team is now using the feedback and information gathered to create a detailed design of the bridge rehabilitation in preparation for construction this spring.”
It all led to the now $12 million project, with the latest development seeing crews complete a crucial step in the rehabilitation by lifting the bridge onto new structural steel supports.
With the bridge still closed to all road users and construction efforts ongoing, detours will remain in place as the project continues.
The region has said two-way traffic will be maintained on Rivers Edge Drive and Covered Bridge Drive throughout the course of construction, with Line 86 also able to be used as an alternate route for commuters.
The bridge is currently expected to reopen in Spring of 2027, with the full list of details available on the Region of Waterloo’s website.
