With the calendar making the big turn to September, and Waterloo Region inching closer to fall, it means the eyes of parents and families everywhere are turning back to school, with college and university move-in weekend just days away.
For the City of Waterloo, it’s set to mark yet another busy stretch for drivers and residents alike, with a list of closures and detours throughout the University District.
“The City of Waterloo extends a warm and neighbourly welcome to all new and returning students at Conestoga College, the University of Waterloo, and Wilfrid Laurier University as they return to Waterloo for the start of the school year,” said the City of Waterloo in a release.
The main crux of the closures expected to impact motorists throughout the weekend centres around Seagram Drive between University Avenue and Albert Street, which will be limited to local traffic and move-in traffic only, with similar impacts on Regina Street and Lester Street.
Further closures will spread to some surrounding streets from there.
The full list of expected closures from Sept. 4 to Sept. 5 includes:
- Seagram Drive – closed from University Ave to Albert St, local traffic and move-in traffic only.
- Lester Street – northbound one-way traffic only, local traffic and move-in traffic only.
- Sunview Street – no left turns from University Ave.
- Hazel Street – no left turns onto Wilfrid Laurier University campus.
- Regina Street – closed from University Ave to Hickory Street until September 6, local traffic and move-in traffic only.
A list of areas will also be impacted by parking restrictions from Sept. 4 to Sept. 6, including:
- Lester Street from Seagram Drive to University Ave
- Bricker Ave from Clayfield Ave to King Street
- Marshall Street from Brighton Street to Regina Street.
- Regina Street from Hickory Street to University Ave
- Hickory Street (northside)
“The City’s focus during move-in weekend is to keep traffic flowing and help students, families and residents navigate the area safely and efficiently,” the city said.
“The City thanks residents, students and visitors for their patience and understanding while navigating the area during move-in weekend.”
