Investigations are underway, and charges are expected, all after a head-on collision just outside Hamilton led to the death of a mother from Cambridge and left her 2-year-old son in critical condition.
The details come from Burlington OPP, which said it all happened Tuesday, Oct. 6, at around 7 a.m., when officers were told of the crash on Highway 5, just east of Highway 8.
“Initial investigation indicates that a pickup truck, operated by a 20-year-old male from Millgrove, was westbound and collided with a minivan that was travelling eastbound, operated by a 35-year-old male from Cambridge,” said OPP in a release.
“As a result of the collision, a 32-year-old female in the front passenger seat of the minivan was pronounced deceased at the scene, and a 2-year-old male rear passenger in the minivan was transported to a local children’s hospital with critical injuries.”
The two drivers, meanwhile, were both taken to local hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The severity of the incident led to a lengthy road closure in the area, all as units from the OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (TIME) team, OPP Technical Collision Investigators, and Reconstructionists worked to piece together the scene.
“Charges are pending, and the investigation remains ongoing.”
OPP is asking that anyone with details of the incident, including those who stopped to assist at the scene or who has dashcam footage of the crash, contact police at 1-888-310-1122.
