A major multi-tower high-rise development has gotten the necessary approval in the City of Waterloo, meaning over 3,000 units of housing could soon be on the way to a key intersection.
The project, slated for the corner of Northfield Drive West and Weber Street North, was presented once again at a public meeting earlier in the week, marking the second of such meetings tied to the development.
The first public meeting came over two years ago, back in June of 2024.
At the time of the first meeting, the development was pegged at 13 total towers ranging from 25 to 40 storeys in height, but since then, the maximum height of those towers has been reduced following some feedback from the community.

“Northfield Equities Inc. is proposing to develop a high-density residential community with commercial and employment uses on the subject lands,” the project said on its EngageWR page.
“The plan includes 11 high-rise towers, five 1-storey buildings for employment/commercial uses and two park spaces, totalling 1.06 hectares.”
Now, the slated project will only be able to reach as high as 35 storeys, still expected to hold as many as 3,084 units of residential housing, on top of community and park space as well as commercial areas.
“This is an ideal location for growth in Waterloo,” said Mayor Dorothy McCabe.
“I look forward to seeing this one come to life.”

It’s all pegged for the former site of National Cash Registry (NCR) Canada at 170-200 Northfield Dr. W and 570-655 Weber St. N, a 40-acre site at the corner of the intersection and, alongside the listed units of housing, the project is also expected to see restaurants, a drugstore, retail sites, and more on the space.
Council ultimately approved the plans unanimously, but while the approval from council is in hand, the timeline has yet to be set in stone and is expected to be completed in phases over the next 15 years.
