Charges anticipated after e-scooter rider struck in Waterloo

Regional police say charges are likely following a crash on Thursday morning that send an e-scooter rider to hospital.

It was around 6:35 a.m. when regional police say they responded to reports of a crash between an e-scooter and a motor vehicle on Northfield Drive West.

That crash and the subsequent investigation brought a closure to eastbound lanes of Northfield between Parkside Drive and Conestogo Road West.

Police said their investigation determined the e-scooter rider, a 19-year-old Kitchener man, was heading eastward when he was struck by a Toyota that was attempting to making lane change, driven by a 25-year-old man from Quebec.

The rider of the e-scooter was thrown from their vehicle, sustaining serious but non-life-threatening injuries. They have since been transported to an out-of-region hospital for treatment.

The partial closure on Northfield Drive West has since been lifted, though the investigation is still ongoing – and police say they expect charges will be laid.
