A key intersection just east of Kitchener is set to see some major changes, with a new roundabout set to bring a road closure in Woolwich Township next week.
According to the Region of Waterloo, the corner of Sawmill Road and Ebycrest Road, just north of Highway 7, is set to see a week-long road closure from Monday, Aug. 24 through Sunday, Aug. 30.
“The Region of Waterloo is constructing a single-lane roundabout at the Sawmill Road and Ebycrest Road intersection in Woolwich,” the region said on its website.
“This decision is based on technical studies and the Region’s current experience with roundabouts and input received from the public during the engagement period.
The region has said that the construction, pegged at $3.7 million, is working to reduce serious collisions seen in past years at the busy corner, alongside trimming down commuting times for drivers across the region.
It will mark the first stage of an over-two-month project, with construction beginning at the corner Aug. 24, before moving to Sawmill Road and Kraft Drive in October, and expected to be wrapped up by November.
“During Stage 1, Bloomingdale Road and Kraft Drive will be closed to through traffic, with local access maintained,” said the region.
“Two-way traffic will remain on Sawmill Road and Ebycrest Road. Drivers can use Bridge Street and Ebycrest Road as detour routes.”
It did note, however, that traffic may travel on gravel surfaces and be controlled by flag persons at times, adding that “delays are expected.”
Further details on the upcoming project can be found on the Region of Waterloo website.
