With the last day for candidates to register ahead of the upcoming municipal election just a day away, there is a list of wards throughout Waterloo Region that remain uncontested, including every single riding in Wellesley Township.
It comes as those prospective candidates have until Friday afternoon to register to run in the upcoming election.
Looking at the list of wards and already registered candidates, there are a few key areas and names that, as of now, seem to have a potentially easier race than most in the region.
Across Waterloo Region, there are seven wards that currently have just a lone nominee in the running, a majority of which are in Wellesley Township, where all four ridings have just a single nominee for each.
Of those seven ridings and their current candidates, all but one are heading into the election as the incumbent, having just served in the position.
Altogether, the list of single-candidate ridings includes:
- City of Waterloo – Ward 7: Julie Wright (Incumbent)
- Township of North Dumfries – Ward 3: Alida Wilms (Incumbent)
- Township of Wilmot – Ward 3: Harvir Sidhu (Incumbent)
- Township of Wellesley – Ward 1: Shelley Wagner (Incumbent)
- Township of Wellesley – Ward 2: Caressa Madison
- Township of Wellesley – Ward 3: Derek Brick (Incumbent)
- Township of Wellesley – Ward 4: Claude Hergott (Incumbent)
It should also be noted that of those single-candidate ridings, two were also uncontested in the previous 2022 election as well, with Alida Wilms and Shelley Wagner having the potential of not being challenged in back-to-back elections.
It all comes following the previous 2022 municipal election, where there were also seven ridings which went uncontested, largely focused around North Dumfries.
The deadline for potential candidates to submit their names for the 2026 municipal election is Friday, Aug. 21 at 2 p.m.
