After a key staple of Oktoberfest celebrations that’s filled hearts and stomachs for years was called off, a recent correction and apology is giving some clarity on the cancellation of the annual K-W Oktoberfest Family Breakfast.
The announcement of the cancellation was first made back on Oct. 3, saying that the event, hosted by Bingemans and Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) Foundation, would not be held in 2026.
In its original statement, K-W Oktoberfest said it came “following a review of their respective event portfolios and organizational priorities,” adding that “WRHN and Bingemans have made the decision not to proceed with the Family Breakfast this year.”
That announcement led to some criticism and contention on social media, as many were confused and angered by the sudden cancellation of the popular event.

“In light of recent posts and community discussion in the popular Facebook group Food in Waterloo Region, K-W Oktoberfest would like to address the circumstances surrounding the pause of the Annual Oktoberfest Family Breakfast and correct inaccurate information shared in our communication,” said K-W Oktoberfest in a post.
It issued an apology to WRHN Foundation, Bingemans, and the community for the recent notice, saying it “inaccurately attributed responsibility for this year’s cancellation to these partners, leading to misplaced criticism.”
Alongside the apology, K-W Oktoberfest worked to provide some clarity on the situation, saying discussions began around the event and the potential cancellation of the Family Breakfast earlier in the summer.

“Discussions began in July, when WRHN Foundation approached K-W Oktoberfest to explore whether the organization could take on the event or support an alternative path forward,” K-W Oktoberfest said in a statement.
“K-W Oktoberfest assumed responsibility however, to allow time to thoughtfully plan its next chapter, made the decision to pause the Family Breakfast for 2026.”
It said both WRHN Foundation and Bingemans have generously supported the community tradition for many years “through event leadership, venue and culinary sponsorship, volunteer support and community partnership.”
“Neither organization was responsible for the decision to pause the event.”
K-W Oktoberfest added that its earlier notice failed to accurately reflect the contributions and willingness that the two groups had shown to push the event forward, and it is still hoping to find a way to bring the event back in 2027.
“We take responsibility for the misunderstanding and sincerely apologize for putting both organizations in that position. They deserve our thanks and the community’s appreciation for their longstanding support.”
