Motorist clocked at 220km/h on Hwy. 401, drivers urged to ‘understand the consequences’

Motorists across Waterloo Region are being reminded once again to drive responsibly whenever they’re on the roads, as a driver in Cambridge has been pulled over and charged after being clocked at over 200 km/h on Highway 401 in Cambridge.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) took to social media, posting photos of a vehicle pulled off to the side of the westbound lanes of Highway 401, after officers said the driver was caught going 220 km/h.

The post stated that the 20-year-old driver from Kitchener has since been charged with dangerous driving and stunt driving, now facing a 30-day license suspension and having their vehicle impounded for 14 days.

It comes as OPP have continued to stress the dangers of aggressively driving, speeding, and not staying focused on the road.

“254. That’s how many people have died already this year in motor vehicle collisions investigated by the OPP across the province,” said Sergeant Kerry Schmidt with the OPP’s Highway Safety Division.

He said many of those incidents could have been avoided if drivers and motorists simply drove according to the rules of the road and elected for safety rather than unsafe driving.

Of note among those 254 fatalities, Schmidt stated that motorcyclists have accounted for 38, “four of them just this past week,” pointing to a disturbing trend seen across roadways throughout the year so far.

For reference, provincial police previously stated that 344 people lost their lives on OPP-patrolled roadways in 2025.

That means that in just about two-thirds of the year, as of September 1, the province has already seen as much as 75 per cent of the number of fatalities in 2026 compared with last year.

“Whether you’re driving a motorcycle, a motor vehicle, a big truck, or you’re riding a bicycle or just a pedestrian on a highway, we want to make sure people understand the rules of the road, they share the road safely, and understand the consequences of making a bad decision.”

He said it’s always important to pay attention on the road, which only becomes more challenging the faster someone is driving.

OPP state that everyone should be driving smart and acting responsibly, so everyone can get home safely at the end of the day.
