A major push for travel options to and around the local townships is on the way, all as the Region of Waterloo has announced approximately $3.4 million in funding to help expand transit options to Woolwich, Wilmot, Wellesley, and North Dumfries.
The announcement was made by the region and the Ontario Government, which allotted the region that $3.4 million from a $16 million pool through the Ontario Transit Investment Fund (OTIF), being given to support more remote communities and their local transit access across the province.
“Our government is investing in safe and reliable transit that keeps people moving, strengthens communities and supports a stronger, more resilient and self-reliant economy,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation.
“No matter where you live, Ontarians deserve access to transportation they can depend on. Through the Ontario Transit Investment Fund, we are expanding transit options that connect people to jobs, housing and essential services.”
According to the province, the fund is designed to support the start-up and expansion of transit projects, “like new bus services, on-demand rideshare services and door-to-door transportation.”
“Across Waterloo Region, people rely on dependable, low-cost transportation options to access jobs, education, services, cultural events, family and friends,” said Waterloo Mayor Dorothy McCabe.
“This investment will help strengthen these connections and make it easier for residents and visitors to move throughout the region, support economic growth, and ensure our communities remain connected and accessible.”
The OTIF was first launched back in 2024 when it included around $5 million in annual funding, which has since been increased by up to $10 million annually over the next three years.
GRT previously stated that further access and transit developments to the local townships were part of its priorities in the years ahead, in line with its long-term business plan.
That plan included projects which would further develop already existing routes, add on-demand transit zones, and kick-start new routes that would provide further access across Woolwich, Wilmot, Wellesley, and North Dumfries.
“The support from the Ontario Transit Investment Fund will help us deliver new and improved transit connections for residents living in and travelling to Waterloo Region’s townships,” said Regional Chair Karen Redman.
“By supporting new and expanded Grand River Transit service, the Province is helping us improve access to jobs, services and community destinations while building a more connected and sustainable region.”
