Residents in Waterloo Region are being warned to take cover if threatening weather approaches their location – with several significant weather warnings in place for a severe thunderstorm said to be capable of producing a Tornado.
It was just after 5 p.m. when Environment Canada issued a red warning for both a severe thunderstorm and tornado, warning of a significant thunderstorm capable of producing damaging wind gusts in the area of Gads Hill in Perth East. That storm, said to be moving eastward toward Waterloo Region, has the potential for destructive winds, damaging hail and flooding rainfall.
This warning was put in place in addition to existing watches for severe thunderstorms, issued on Wednesday afternoon.
The latest alert from Environment Canada warns of potential impacts for areas of Waterloo Region including New Hamburg, Wellesley, Wilmot and Woolwich.
“This is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation.” reads that alert.
Residents in impacted areas are warned to take cover immediately with sturdy shelter if threatening weather approaches. Those without shelter are directed to lie in a low spot and protect themselves from flying debris.
