Four teenagers are dead, and two others are battling serious injuries following a single-vehicle crash outside Guelph, with police saying speeding and a lack of seatbelts may have been contributing factors in the tragic incident.
The crash was first reported Saturday, Oct. 31, at around 1:35 a.m., when Wellington County OPP was called about a single-vehicle collision on Watson Road South, between Maltby Road and Wellington Road 34 in Puslinch.
“The investigation has determined that six occupants were travelling in the vehicle when it left the roadway, struck a guardrail and entered a ravine,” said Wellington County OPP in a release.
“Four occupants were pronounced deceased at the scene. The deceased individuals include a 19-year-old male from Mississauga, a 19-year-old male from Brampton, a 17-year-old female from Mississauga and a 15-year-old female from Milton.”
Two others were injured in the incident, including a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old woman, both from Mississauga, who were transported to hospital for treatment. The 17-year-old is said to be battling “life-altering injuries,” while the 16-year-old sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
“Investigators continue to gather information and carefully assess all available evidence, including information related to speed and seatbelt use, as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision,” said police.
During a media briefing, Inspector Karen Medeiros with OPP confirmed that inquiry, saying, “I don’t believe that this vehicle had enough seatbelts for the amount of occupants that were in the vehicle.”
She later added, though, that investigations are still on the go into the circumstances surrounding the crash itself, saying, “it is too early to determine exactly what caused the collision.”

OPP acknowledged that the severity of the incident has garnered significant local attention, with Medeiros saying, “Understandably so.”
“Four young people have lost their lives in a matter of moments. Families have been forever changed, and an entire community is searching for answers.”
The investigation remains active at this time, with OPP reaching out to nearby residents and motorists who may have been driving in the area for possible details on the crash, specifically searching for any home surveillance or dashcam footage that could aid in their efforts.
