KITCHENER – Kitchener is set to become home to Canada’s first multi-sport glass floor, with a new installation coming to the Cowan Recreation Centre at R-B-J Schlegel Park.
The new floor is expected to be ready for use in early 2027 and will be one of the largest installations of its kind in the world.
The innovative surface will support a wide range of sports, including basketball, volleyball, pickleball, badminton, floor hockey, futsal and wheelchair sports.
Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic says the investment is about creating more opportunities for residents while bringing a unique recreation experience to the community.
“Great community spaces should evolve alongside the people who use them,” said Vrbanovic. “The multi-sport glass floor reflects the kind of future we’re building in Kitchener, one that embraces innovation while creating more diverse opportunities for residents to compete, connect and belong close to home.”
Vrbanovic says the first-of-its-kind installation in Canada could also attract new sporting events and visitors, supporting local businesses and the city’s economy.
The Cowan Recreation Centre officially opens November 14th. Visitors will be able to get a behind-the-scenes look at the technology beneath the glass panels, with installation of the floor expected to wrap up early in the new year.
