It’s not just a regular start to the work week across Waterloo Region, as, with it being the first Monday of August, it’s the Civic Holiday.
While it’s a day that gives an extra long weekend to many throughout the region, there’s also a list of closures and changes that residents will have to keep in mind before they head out the door.
Various stores and businesses will still remain open through the holiday Monday, but there are key closures to watch out for, including:
General Closures/Changes
- Banks, financial institutions
- Government offices and administrative buildings
- No Canada Post delivery
- No curbside garbage or waste collection
- Grand River Transit (GRT) running on holiday service schedule

- Kitchener Market
- The Kitchener Memorial Auditorium
Waterloo
- Waterloo City Hall
Cambridge
- Cambridge City Hall
- City arenas
- Cambridge Public Library
- Cambridge Farmers’ Market
Region of Waterloo
- Waste transfer stations
- Libraries
While there is a list of closures across the region, there is a lot still unchanged and remaining open throughout the Civic Holiday. Some of those include:
- Most grocery stores
- Local malls operating on reduced holiday schedule, including Conestoga Mall and Fairview Park Mall
- Most restaurants and movie theatres
- Select LCBO and Beer Store locations
- The Region of Waterloo International Airport
- Most splashpads, cooling spaces, and pools
