A Mississauga man is facing serious charges, including criminal negligence causing death, in connection with a sudden death investigation in Cambridge.
It was on July 4 when police began their investigation into the sudden death of a man in Cambridge.
Their investigation revealed that the man had arranged participation in a private healing experience and consumed ibogaine, a “psychoactive alkaloid extract” derived from root bark of a forest shrub in Central West Africa.
Regional police note that ibogaine is not authorized for use in Canada, with potential for side effects including nausea, vomiting, serious injury or death.
A search warrant was executed by police on Thursday at a home in Mississauga, leading to the seizure of suspected ibogaine as well as “several other powders, liquids and capsules” that have since been sent to Health Canada for identification and analysis.
As a result of the investigation, 57-year-old Luis Da Silva has been arrested and charged with both criminal negligence causing death and selling a prescription drug recklessly.
