In a push for inclusive and welcoming voting during the upcoming municipal election, the City of Cambridge will be equipping select voting locations with accessible voting devices this October.
Those Accessible Ballot Marking Devices (ABMD) will be set up at a voting location in each ward for the election, with the city saying that it will provide enhanced options for independently marking a ballot.
“Accessibility has been a key consideration in the selection and preparation of voting locations across the city,” said the city in a release.
“The goal is to ensure that every voter has the opportunity to cast their ballot independently with confidence.”
The key features being offered through the technology include:
- Touchscreen controls
- Handheld touchpad navigation
- Paddle switches
- Sip-and-puff technology
- Audio ballot support
- Other assistive features that promote independent voting
While the ABMD will give a key option to those who require the added accessibility, the city said that it’s also extending the options even further, including for those unable to leave their homes.
“The City is offering an at-home voting program for individuals unable to leave their homes due to illness or extenuating circumstances,” said the city.
“Additionally, the City is working to ensure voting locations are accessible and accommodate a wide range of needs wherever possible.”
It stated that all voting locations across the city will include barrier-free entrances and pathways, accessible parking spaces, wheelchair-accessible voting areas, and seating for voters “who may require rest while waiting.”
That’s on top of having election staff available on site to provide added assistance when needed.
The city is recommending that voters who may require those accessibility accommodations contact the city’s election team in advance to learn more about any available options that would work best.
