Visitors to Kitchener’s new Cowan Recreation Centre will have the chance to enjoy the taste of a local restaurant staple when it opens later this year.
The city has announced it has chosen Almadina to operate on-site food services at the new recreation centre, located at RBJ Schlegel park, after a “competitive process” to find a new partner that emphasized a number of factors including “fresh, nutritious and locally sourced food, diverse and inclusive menu offerings, strong customer experience” and more.
Almadina has been serving Mediterranean-inspired food more than 30 years in the community with four locations in Waterloo Region, including one at the Kitchener Market.
“Supporting local businesses is essential to building a strong, resilient economy, and Almadina is a great example of the entrepreneurial spirit that makes Kitchener special.” reads a statement from Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic.
“For more than 30 years, this family-run business has been part of our community, and now they’ll help fuel a landmark recreation centre designed for everyone to connect, compete and belong.”
On-site food services are planned to operate between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. seven days a week at the recreation centre when the facility opens later this year. The city notes that the first year of operations will serve as a “pilot period,” with potential adjustments to hours based on demand. Menu items will include smoothies and juices, build-your-own-bowls, falafel wraps and kid-friendly options.
“This community has supported us for decades, and we’re excite to bring our fresh menu and our commitment to great customer experience to a space that will serve families, athletes and visitors in the years to come,” reads a statement from Abdullah Lawendy, owner of Almadina.
Approved by council back in 2024, the recreation centre boosts a number of amenities including an indoor aquatic centre, a tournament-sized indoor turf fieldhouse, cricket practice nets and more.
