WRPS lay 14 impaired charges in 12-hour span across Waterloo Region

It was a busy start to the weekend for Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS), which laid 14 impaired-related charges, eight of which centred around impaired driving, in just a 12-hour span.

Officers said the offences were all given between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, Sept. 11 and 12.

One incident centred around a 2-vehicle crash at around 4 p.m., when WRPS was called about the incident at Elgin Street North and Winter Avenue in Cambridge.

Police said a Chevrolet Cruze and a Honda Civic collided at the intersection, and while the driver of the Chevrolet wasn’t injured, the driver of the Honda was left with non-life-threatening injuries.

As a result, a 42-year-old woman from Cambridge was charged with Operation While Impaired, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose, Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon, and Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking.

Then, shortly after midnight, police received reports of a Mazda sedan “Swerving and driving on the wrong side of the road” on Gingerich Road in Baden.

Officers were able to locate the vehicle in New Hamburg and, when they tried to stop the car, the driver backed into a police cruiser.

It’s now led to charges for a 48-year-old woman from Wilmot Township, who was then charged with Operation While Impaired and Dangerous Operation.

Further to those two incidents, police also laid impaired-related charges in a series of other incidents across Kitchener, Cambridge, and Waterloo, including impaired driving charges near Riverside Park, Pioneer Park, and in Uptown Waterloo.

In total, 14 charges were laid for impaired-related offences between 1 p.m. on Sept. 11 and 3 a.m. on Sept. 12.
