Even though classes just began in Waterloo Region, the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) is already turning to future growth and demand, officially breaking ground on a new elementary school in Breslau.
The city held a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday for the Breslau-Hopewell Community Elementary School, located at 95 Loxleigh Lane.
“Breaking ground on a new school is always an exciting moment because we know what it represents for the community,” said Maedith Radlein, Chair of the WRDSB Board of Trustees.
“It is the beginning of a place where students will make friends, discover their strengths and create memories that stay with them for years to come.”
It comes as the Ontario government approved a $32.5 million investment for the project, pushing to support the construction of the new school, which will support students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8.
“We are excited to celebrate this important milestone with the Breslau community,” said Scott Miller, WRDSB Chief Executive Officer.
“This investment will create a modern, inclusive learning environment where students can learn, grow and build connections. We are grateful for the continued investment and partnership that will help this growing community thrive for generations to come.”
The city said the new school is built in “response to the continued growth of the Breslau-Hopewell Crossing community,” set to hold as many as 611 students, alongside a 4-room child care centre.
“Our government is focused on supporting students, teachers and parents while ensuring school boards are equipping our students with the tools they need to succeed,” said Paul Calandra, Minister of Education.
“Once completed, this project will offer an inspiring learning environment that helps students prepare for rewarding, in-demand careers.”
As construction gets underway, the new school will be given an official name, all before the site is officially slated to open as of the next school year, that’s September of 2027.
