Drivers heading through Elmira this weekend may need to be ready for a brief detour – as an ongoing road improvement project is expected to bring a closure to the township this weekend.
The Region of Waterloo continues its work improving Arthur Street South between Kenning Place and South Street East, with the latest phase of construction bringing a closure to the intersection of Arthur Street and Church Street.
That closure is expected to be in place from 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, right through to 11 p.m. on Sunday to allow crews to remove existing brick pavers and replace them with asphalt. Detour signage will be in place to help drivers, residents and businesses.
The work doesn’t end this weekend though – with a closure also expected on Arthur Street between South Street and Church Street from Nov. 2 to Nov. 13 to allow for milling of the road surface and complete paving.

Phase one of this reconstruction project, between South Street and Church Street, includes replacement of existing sidewalks, upgrades to street lighting, aforementioned asphalt resurfacing and more – though the region notes no cycling lanes will be added to the roadway.
The second phase of the work focuses on Arthur between Church Street and Kenning Place and is tentatively scheduled for 2028 construction, with planning and design still underway.
