Drivers heading through the area of downtown Kitchener can expect a detour on their route – with a significant closure rolling out on King Street East beginning on Tuesday.
The City of Kitchener has started work on road and sewer improvements on King Street East, with the first phase of work closing that roadway between Stirling Avenue North and Ottawa Street North.
According to the city, that work is being conducted to replace “older, deteriorated” underground services, with planned improvements to existing storm sewer, sanitary sewer and water mains in the area.
Improvement plans also include attention to curbs and gutters, upgrades to the road’s asphalt and the addition of active transportation infrastructure.
The phase one closure is set to be a lengthy one, with plans to close the roadway through to August of 2027. Detour signage can be found in the area to help drivers navigate around the issue.
